The Galleria dell’Accademia (Accademia Gallery)in Florence is one of the most important sculpture museums in the world.
Here is the most significant number of sculptures by Michelangelo in the world, seven, including the famous David.
The colossal work was brought here in 1873, moved from its original location in Piazza della Signoria: the figure of the young David defeating the giant, which has become one of the symbols of Florence, embodied the freedom of the Florentine Republic and for this reason, the statue was positioned in front of Palazzo Vecchio.
Today it is housed in a specially built grandstand, scenically placed at the end of a gallery, surrounded by natural lighting guaranteed by a vast skylight.

The home of Michelangelo’s masterpieces, starting with David, and the works of other important artists
At the Accademia gallery, you can also admire the Prigioni (or Slaves), the famous four unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo, figures who seem to want to free themselves from the marble that imprisons them which are among the best examples of Michelangelo’s working method, the unfinished. Made for the tomb of Julius II, they were instead used by the Grand Duke Cosimo de’ Medici to decorate the Grotta del Buontalenti in the Boboli Gardens. The Awakening enslaved person, the Young enslaved person, the Bearded Slave, and the Atlas only arrived at the Gallery in 1908.
The collection of Michelangelo’s works includes the Palestrina Pietà and the San Matteo.
