Here is a brief guide to Florence’s holiday festivities
Go to Florence at the time of the season of Christmas, and you’ll discover it to be in its most stunning form. Lights of Christmas decorate all the avenues of this city that were the birthplace of the Renaissance, and charming Christmas markets are held in the piazzas of the historical center.
The official start date for the Christmas celebrations is, in the majority of Italian cities, December 8, which is a major National holiday celebrated in Italy and typically marks the beginning of the Christmas season.
However, the celebrations are already underway this year, with neighborhoods and streets being lit up in an enchanting show set against the backdrop of ancient palaces and monuments, making Florence more stunning.
The famous German-inspired Christmas market that has been an annually held tradition throughout Florence for the past 20 decades (except 2020) is already put up at Piazza Santa Croce. Visitors can peruse the more than 50 wooden stalls, purchase crafts, find ideas for gifts, and sip hot mulled wine, exactly as the locals do. The Weihnachtsmarkt runs from December 20 to 20. (There are several other Christmas markets in town.)
The most anticipated event could be the lighting of the Christmas tree in Piazza Duomo, which is always the focal point of Florence’s festive season, on December 7 at 5:30 at 5 pm. It’s not just the one Christmas tree that is scheduled to be lit up in Florence, and you might be interested in looking up the illuminations on Palazzo Vecchio (5 pm), Piazza Della Repubblica (6 6:45 pm), Piazzale Michelangelo (6:30 at 6:00 pm) as well as San Lorenzo (7 pm).
The most memorable part of the celebrations is likely to be the projection display on the famous Ponte Vecchio. From December 8 through January 9, the event named ‘F-Light’ will display images onto the façades that line the Ponte Vecchio and on churches and monuments, such as churches and monuments, including the Basilica di San Lorenzo, Museo Galileo, Istituto degli Innocenti, and the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte.
This year’s theme will be “Reflections: where we are, where we are going.” The local authorities haven’t revealed the projected images in what they call the result of a “surprise.”
The towers and gates surrounding the center will also be lit each day from December 8 until January 9, until midnight, from 5:30 pm.
Via Tornabuoni, Florence’s shopping street, is set to be flooded with ‘luminous rain and decorated with lights, tree decorations, and festoons that will make an average stroll awe-inspiring.
The year is 2009, and Florence will be adding a second attraction. Ferris wheels are set to be installed on the grounds of the Fortress (Giardini of Fortezza) and allow people to take in the view of Florence from the Tuscan capital at 55 meters above.
In addition to the wheel is an ice rink that is the biggest in Europe that spans 320 meters, will provide fun for all the family. The entertainment is provided by Santa Claus’ appearances, along with games and surprises for kids from December 3 through 24. Its Ferris wheel and ‘Florence On Ice Village are open from December 3 until January 16, 2022.
